The Motel
Designers: Martin Judd and Francesca Crolley

Immediately upon entry, you know The Motel is not your average Adobe Atmosphere environment. There is something evil lurking about and it's up to you to figure out how to put an end to it.

Francesca Crolley and Martin Judd make a great team, and The Motel is an excellent showcase of their individual strengths and combined talent.

Taking The Motel well beyond what any other Atmosphere game has done to date is Martin's scripting. With over 3000 lines of javascript, the interactivity here challenges the notion that Atmosphere is only suited for quick, single session web games. Because there is so much to do and explore in the Motel, the ability to save your place within the game immediately became one of my favorite features.

Francesca's Atmosphere modeling and texturing skills are highlighted in all of the interesting details you will find as you progress through the various areas in the game. I love how her attention to all the little things adds to the wonderfully creepy feeling of The Motel. A particularly good example of this is the mirror reflections in the rooms which include the faint, haunting image of the resident spirit.

Then there are all the other cool extras included in the user interface for the game. Just turn the TV dial for a map, character information, and clues. Actually, even the interface itself adds to the period feel of the game, reminding me of old episodes of the Twilight Zone.

I should also mention that because of all this great stuff, The Motel is a bit of a heavy download when you begin your adventure (an average of about 5 minutes, even on my cable modem). However, as you will see once you get inside, it's well worth the wait.

There's something very eerie about a motel with no cars parked in the lot.
Notice the attention to detail, even the window has cobwebs.
Perhaps this is where the Zombies go for eyeballs when they need a snack.
View from the Diner looking out at the Office.
The haunting resident spirit of The Motel.
This guy made me nearly jump out of my seat a few times.
